Walk with Me
My name is Seo-yeon and I’m doing a Masters in Psychology at Curtin University. My cousin and I both came to Perth from Seoul to study: we live together in Bentley near campus. We love the lifestyle here, but go home regularly to see the family.
While I’m looking forward to finishing and getting a job, I’ll miss uni. Not just the friends I’ve made, but the extra-curricular stuff. I’m involved with the student newspaper, Grok — I write opinion pieces. Dad says I need to be careful about voicing my opinions so loudly; maybe he’s right, but my editor’s got no complaints. I’m writing an article on social freedom and the law at the moment: North Korea gets a mention, needless to say.
On top of my Masters, I tutor first-years in basic research methodologies. That and a monthly allowance from my parents helps me get by: I do alright, really. I even booked a trip to Kenya online last night. I’ll be joining an eco-tour group that takes in some national parks and ends up on the coast.
Tonight after my yoga class, I’m going to an exhibition with my boyfriend: a group show put on by some Curtin Fine Arts students. Afterwards, we’ll grab a cheap-and-cheerful meal somewhere in Victoria Park. If it’s not too late when I get home, I’ll probably stream some Korean TV. I can’t imagine life before the internet; I mean how did people stay connected with the world?
