New Australians are largely Indian, Chinese and other Asian immigrants, often who left behind their childhood homes and parents to pursue higher education options in major Australian cities. Many have finished their studies and are now degree-qualified young singles and couples, perhaps parents, launching their institutional careers in IT and accountancy and enjoying the Australian way of life. In tight knit groups and often house sharing, New Australians are communally-minded, gregarious and excited by the possibilities of independence and income.
Walk with Me
My flatmates Rueben and Amit and I are going out tonight to celebrate: Amit got a really good job in the IT department of the local hospital. He finished our computer engineering degree last year but Rueben and I still have a semester to go. I hope I can get a job when I am finished like Amit so I can get a temporary graduate visa, and then who knows. My parents want me to go back to India when I’m finished, but I really like it here.
I work a few nights a week at an internet café. It’s good because it’s not too busy and it means I can study at the same time, but it also means sometimes I miss to things with my friends, especially if I have to work Friday or Saturday night.
A few weeks ago I met a girl, Saskia at this club we go to in the city sometimes that has good DJs. I had just won about $200 at the casino and was feeling pretty good. I was standing behind Saskia at the bar and the barman was taking forever so we just started talking. I had just gone to Westfield and bought a new shirt and she said she liked it. I got her a raspberry Cruiser and one for her friend Emma. Amit liked Emma but she said she had a boyfriend, but anyway he was my wing man so he had to stay and talk to her.
Saskia is studying something to do with politics which I don’t know about, but she didn’t know about computers so we ended up talking about movies and TV, especially the new season of The Bachelorette which we both love. Saskia gave me her number and I called the next day. She’s busy with school too so we’ve been having a hard time trying to meet up. I texted her about tonight and she said she would be in the city and might come by. She could be my future wife, who knows. Anything’s possible.
